This case is quite extreme and it also happened in a society with marriage and patriarchy being the norm, so I get why they did what they did and where it ended up. I think it doesn't have to be sad, really depends on how you approach marriage and who you're marrying. Well there's no 100% guarantee in life but planning and making rational decisions and having a solid core will help!
